Parenting Children: Lightening Up On Its Sometimes Foggy Road
Whether parenting children or coaching others, there are times when you just don't feel motivated. What works for me on days when the blahs surface, I call up my Inner Comic. Like many performers, she is often sleeping in. I don't wake her. No need for two grouchy perspectives. I simply suggest that during the day, she alert me to funny or unusual ways of looking at life.
My Inner Comic never fails to point out a hilarious conversation on the bus or a fresh and funny way to view the world. Once I'm laughing again, I know I've made it through the fog.
When my Inner Comic finds nothing to chuckle about, I reach higher and ask Nature to coach me on trading in my blues or black and blues.
Parrots squawking overhead, reminds me to check in on my humor or lack of it. When I hear the crows' mocking sounds, I ask myself if my old negative voice is again nagging at me. These naturally occurring check-ins are my way of reminding myself that I am connected to a greater universe that supports me.
Combine my Inner Comic with Nature's coaching and add a walk through the park with a set of tai chi mixed in and I'm unstoppable.
Our daily practices either support our best selves and most positive directions or they become obstacles on our paths and disconnect us from the good we can be sharing.
What are your daily practices that keep you parenting children with joy and enthusiasm?
Are they simple and quick enough to access when needed. If not, make up new ones, or use mine.
To call on your Inner Comic, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine your favorite comedian, comedy or think about your own sense of humor. Practice looking at incidents throughout the day with this perspective. When strong emotion has you in its grips, look at the thoughts that created it. Then imagine what thoughts your comedian would have. Check in on your emotions and see if they've changed.
If you'd like Nature to coach you, just ask. Then stay open and alert. Nature, in all Her glory, has infinite wonders and delights. Just today I watched a squirrel try to move an apple of the same size. Whenever he couldn't carry it, he'd put it down and eat a little more.
These tools work really well for those who are parenting children. Not only does it help you stay balanced but by teaching them to your children, you can both have a lot of fun together.
